Bathinda’s Balloh Village Declares Itself Tobacco-Free

Bathinda, Nov 12: The panchayat of Balloh village in Bathinda district has banned the sale of all tobacco products, becoming the latest village in Punjab to declare itself tobacco-free.

Led by sarpanch Amarjit Kaur, the village council passed a resolution prohibiting the sale of cigarettes, bidis, and chewing tobacco. “We want our children to grow up in a healthy, addiction-free environment,” Amarjit Kaur said. “The decision was taken with full community support.”

The panchayat warned that anyone found selling tobacco items will be fined ₹5,000. To raise awareness, a rally on the harmful effects of tobacco use was held on Tuesday, drawing participation from panchayat members, students, and residents.

Earlier, in August, Katorewala village in Muktsar district had passed a similar resolution banning the sale of tobacco and related products, along with energy drinks and drugs.

Officials said both villages could serve as examples for other panchayats across Punjab aiming to curb substance use and promote healthier lifestyles.
