Chandigarh police book husband, in-laws after woman’s death

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Dec 7: Chandigarh police have booked the husband and in-laws of a 24-year-old woman who was found dead on Tuesday afternoon in Bapu Dham Colony, after her family alleged that she was tortured for dowry, assaulted repeatedly and forced into an abortion.

In his complaint, the victim’s brother Luv Kumar said Anita had been “beaten, humiliated and threatened” since her marriage to Pankaj in February 2024. “They demanded money constantly. She suffered a miscarriage because of the beatings,” he said.

Kumar said Anita called him hours before her death, crying and pleading for help. “She told me, ‘He is beating me a lot… I fear he might kill me,’” he said.

The family alleged that Pankaj’s suspected illicit relationship worsened the violence. They also accused his sister Meenakshi and brother Vijay of participating in the harassment.

Kumar said he learned about her condition when a neighbour phoned him around 3:42 p.m. “By the time I reached the hospital, she was gone,” he said, alleging that Anita had visible injuries when he arrived.

Police have registered the FIR under Section 80 (dowry death) of the BNS and said further action will follow based on postmortem and forensic findings.
