12 Indians Missing in Russia, MEA Confirms

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, July 25: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that 12 Indian nationals are officially missing in Russia amid growing concerns that some youths were allegedly stranded and forcibly recruited into the Russian armed forces.

The information was shared in a written response in the Rajya Sabha after MP Balbir Singh Seechewal raised the issue in Parliament on Thursday, urging the government to act with urgency. Despite disruptions in the ongoing monsoon session, the government responded to the written query, as mandated.

“The ministry must clarify the obstacles faced in bringing these youths home and outline the actions being taken to overcome them,” Seechewal said, questioning the lack of updates to families and seeking details on legal and logistical support being provided to those still abroad.

In his response, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the House that while 98 Indian nationals have returned after completing their service in the Russian military, 13 are still serving, and 12 are listed as missing by Russian authorities.

“The Government of India has repeatedly urged Russian authorities to provide updates on the missing individuals and to ensure their safety, well-being, and early release,” the minister said.

He added that the Indian Embassy in Moscow is actively assisting returnees by facilitating travel documents and arranging air travel where necessary. “The safety and welfare of Indian nationals abroad remain the government’s top priority, and every request for help is being addressed promptly,” Singh stated.

The matter continues to draw public and political attention, particularly as families of the missing youths await clarity on their whereabouts and well-being.
