BARNALA, 2 July — A two-and-a-half-year-old girl tragically drowned in a roadside drain near Sanghera Road in Barnala on Tuesday afternoon, police officials said.
The child, whose parents are migrant labourers residing in nearby temporary shelters, was reportedly playing with other children when she accidentally fell into the open drain and drowned.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satvir Singh confirmed the incident. “We received information about the recovery of a young girl’s body from a drain this afternoon. She is the daughter of migrant workers. Preliminary investigation suggests she drowned while playing near the area,” he said.
The body was recovered shortly after the incident, and further investigative procedures are underway, the DSP added.
The incident has once again raised concerns over open drains and lack of safety infrastructure in vulnerable residential zones across Barnala.
