Patiala, Dec 22: Former IPS officer Amar Singh Chahal, who faces charges in the 2015 Faridkot firing case, was admitted to a private hospital in critical condition on Monday following an alleged suicide attempt, police officials said.

Chahal suffered a gunshot injury to the chest and was taken to Park Hospital, where he remains under treatment. His condition continues to be serious, officials said.

According to police, a note was recovered from the scene indicating financial distress, which the writer attributed to an alleged online fraud. Authorities have launched an investigation to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Patiala SSP Varun Sharma said police responded immediately after receiving information about the firing.

“Our teams reached the spot without delay and ensured that he was shifted to hospital in a very critical state,” Sharma said.

Chahal was named in a chargesheet filed on February 24, 2023, by a Punjab Police SIT led by ADGP L.K. Yadav in connection with the Faridkot firing case. The chargesheet also named former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and several senior police officers.

Police said more information would be shared after completion of the investigation.
