Chandigarh, Aug. 17 — Punjab Police arrested 38 alleged drug smugglers during a statewide operation on Saturday, carrying out raids at 301 locations and registering 28 FIRs, officials said.

With the latest arrests, the total number of alleged drug smugglers taken into custody has climbed to 25,909 in 168 days, police said. The operation also led to the recovery of 620 gm heroin and 1,612 intoxicating tablets and capsules.

The drive was conducted simultaneously across all 28 police districts on the directions of director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. Special DGP (law and order) Arpit Shukla said more than 100 teams, comprising over 900 personnel and supervised by 70 gazetted officers, took part.

“Police teams also checked 316 suspicious persons during the day-long operation, and 33 of them were convinced to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment,” Shukla said.

He reiterated that the state government was following a three-pronged strategy of enforcement, de-addiction and prevention (EDP) to tackle the drug menace.

Police officials said such simultaneous operations would continue as part of the state’s broader campaign against narcotics.
