NEW DELHI, July 10— A mild earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale shook Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning, sending people rushing out of homes, offices, and high-rise buildings in panic across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and surrounding areas.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor struck at 9:04 a.m., with its epicentre located 3 km northeast of Jhajjar in Haryana, approximately 51 km west of Delhi. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres — considered shallow — which intensified the shaking felt across the region.
“There was no warning. Suddenly, the windows rattled and the floor seemed to sway. People just ran outside,” said Poonam Mehta, a resident of Gurugram’s Sector 57.
Despite the intensity of the tremors, authorities confirmed that no casualties or damage to property had been reported as of now. Emergency services and district officials remained on alert, though the situation remained calm.
“We’ve received no reports of structural damage or injuries. Teams are monitoring the situation,” said an NCS official.
The region lies in Seismic Zone IV, known for its moderate to high earthquake risk, and has experienced similar tremors in the past. The NCS continues to assess aftershock probabilities, though none had been recorded by late morning.
