Chandigarh, April 11: Punjab Police arrested 84 alleged drug smugglers, recovering 2.5 kg heroin, 86 kg poppy husk, and ₹70,400 in drug money, taking total arrests under the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign to 5,621 in 41 days.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said over 1,200 police personnel in 200 teams raided 452 locations under the supervision of 86 gazetted officers. The crackdown led to 49 FIRs and checks on 482 ‘suspicious’ individuals.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the government will conduct an in-depth probe into the arrest of eight individuals—including a DRI inspector from Haryana—and the seizure of 4 kg heroin in Amritsar.
Cheema, who chairs the cabinet sub-committee on the anti-drug drive, noted the seriousness of an enforcement officer’s alleged involvement in the trade. He said 3,279 NDPS Act cases have been registered so far, with 5,537 arrests (excluding Thursday’s figures).
He blamed previous SAD-BJP and Congress governments for failing to curb the drug crisis, contrasting them with what he described as the AAP government’s consistent three-year-long crackdown.
