BATHINDA, May 24 — A 49-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his father and secretly cremating the body at home in Sivian village, Bathinda, to cover up the crime, police said Friday.
The accused, identified as Yadwinder Singh, allegedly shot his father, 75-year-old Birinder Singh, on May 20 during an argument over property.
“Yadwinder used his father’s licensed .12 bore rifle and fired two shots, killing him on the spot,” said Superintendent of Police (City) Narinder Singh. “Initial investigation shows only the two were present in the house at the time.”
Police launched an investigation after villagers reported suspicious behavior. “We were tipped off by locals when Yadwinder failed to take the body to the village cremation ground,” SP Singh said. “A police team rushed to the spot and recovered ashes. During interrogation, the accused admitted to the killing.”
A forensic team has collected burnt bone fragments from the scene, which have been sent for DNA analysis. Bloodstains were also found on a cot, and samples are being examined, officials confirmed.
Authorities added that some relatives arrived at the house shortly after the crime and were present during the impromptu cremation. “We are probing whether others were involved or helped conceal the crime,” Singh said.
Yadwinder has been booked under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various provisions of the Arms Act at the Thermal police station.
