Khanna, May 31: A Punjab Roadways Volvo bus travelling from Delhi to Jalandhar collided with a trailer carrying iron rods near the Khanna bus stand on Saturday, triggering panic among passengers but causing no fatalities.
The accident occurred when the bus, with about 35 passengers, attempted to overtake the trailer but failed to find enough space. Eyewitnesses said the bus rear-ended the trailer, causing iron rods extending from it to pierce the front of the bus.
Several frightened passengers jumped out of windows and doors to escape. A few sustained minor injuries and were treated at a nearby facility.
The bus driver, Satnam Singh of Hoshiarpur, claimed the trailer stopped abruptly, leaving him with no time to react. Meanwhile, trailer driver Deepak Kumar of Mandi Gobindgarh alleged the bus was speeding.
ASI Ravinder Kumar, traffic in-charge, confirmed that the road has been cleared and traffic restored. He said a probe is underway, and statements from both drivers are being recorded to determine the exact cause.
