Kanchan Kumari Murder: Two Accused Sent to Police Remand

by TheReportingTimes

BATHINDA, June 14 — A local court on Friday granted Bathinda police two-day remand of Jaspreet Singh and Nimaratjeet Singh, arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known online as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi.

Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal confirmed that the duo is being interrogated, and efforts are ongoing to trace Amritpal Singh Mehron, the alleged mastermind who remains at large.

Amritpal sparked national outrage on Friday after releasing a video claiming responsibility for the killing, in which he warned other influencers against posting “vulgar” content. The video has since gone viral, triggering a deep divide in public opinion, particularly among Sikh groups and Nihang communities.

While some fringe voices have supported Amritpal’s stance, others — including several prominent Sikh leaders and organisations — have condemned the murder as an act of vigilantism, warning against using religion or morality to justify violence.

The incident has also sent shockwaves through the influencer community. Social media personality Preet Jatti, in a tearful video, claimed she received a threatening call from an international number, warning her to stop posting content. “I have a five-month-old baby. I don’t upload anything wrong. I am scared,” she said.

Kanchan Kumari’s killing has ignited a wider debate around freedom of expression, online content regulation, and the growing trend of moral policing.

Police say they are tracking Amritpal’s digital footprint and coordinating with intelligence agencies. “No one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” SSP Kondal said. “We will ensure justice is served.”
