Chandigarh, Sept 16: In a revision of Punjab’s educational service rules, the government has increased the promotion quota for school principals from internal cadres (lecturers, vocational lecturers, headmasters) to 75%, leaving only 25% for direct recruitment.
Eligibility criteria have also been eased: lecturers and vocational lecturers now need five years of experience (down from seven), while headmasters require four years instead of five.
This change aims to fill over 900 vacant principal positions across the state, accelerating upward mobility for existing staff. While teachers generally welcomed the move, some, including the Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), have expressed concern that despite these changes, the requirement of a departmental examination for promotions remains. The DTF has also called for a notification to be issued regarding the direct‐recruitment quota and urged the government to ensure all pending promotions are completed by September 30.
