NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH, December 11 — Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Wednesday warned Parliament that Punjab was witnessing a breakdown of law and order, with gangsters intimidating citizens from both inside jails and foreign locations.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, Warring said people were living under constant threat. “There is an atmosphere of fear. Gangsters are threatening whoever they want, demanding ransom, and the government has failed to ensure safety,” he said.
He alleged that criminal influence had seeped into the state’s political landscape, pointing to the Shiromani Akali Dal’s decision to nominate a candidate “closely related to a gangster” in the Tarn Taran assembly bypoll.
Warring further claimed that Gujarat was providing protection to wanted gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. He said special orders issued there prevented officers from other states from taking Bishnoi into custody despite multiple serious cases.
He told the House that the crisis had escalated beyond the public. “Even political leaders and senior officials have started getting ransom calls,” he said, urging urgent intervention from the Union Home Ministry.
