Chandigarh, Jan 27: Chandigarh is set to prioritize the emotional health of its students alongside academic achievements through the launch of ‘Project Saathi’ this week. The initiative seeks to build self-awareness and digital discipline among teenagers, covering a broad spectrum of topics including nutrition, leadership, and social responsibility. The program arrives as a response to the growing psychological pressures faced by students in the post-pandemic era.
The project is designed to be more than just a series of lectures, incorporating wellness assemblies that focus on movement and connection. By involving students in project-based community activities, the administration hopes to foster a sense of belonging and character building. The pilot phase will specifically monitor students in middle and secondary school levels to track improvements in behavior and mental clarity.
“The project goes beyond conventional counselling by creating safe spaces within schools where students can express themselves freely,” said JM Balamurugan. He mentioned that the integration of meditation through engaging, game-based methods is intended to make mental health care approachable and less stigmatized for young learners.
The planning phase involved a diverse group of experts who identified domestic violence and self-image disorders as critical areas requiring attention. By addressing these factors, the multidisciplinary team from PGIMER and GMCH intends to provide a buffer against the stressors that lead to severe mental health struggles.
Vini Mahajan said the discussions held during the project’s development highlighted a wide range of issues affecting students, including abuse, neglect, and career-related anxiety. The final structure of the program ensures that teachers and principals also receive training to identify early warning signs of distress, creating a supportive ecosystem for the city’s youth.
