Strict Dress Code, Digital Conduct Rules for Himachal Staff

Employees prohibited from criticising state policies on social media platforms

Shimla, March 18: To enforce discipline, the Himachal Pradesh Government has mandated a formal dress code for its workforce, prohibiting the wearing of casuals like T-shirts and jeans in government offices. The new policy affirmed that the appearance of public servants must align with the dignity of their roles. Male employees are now expected to wear collared shirts and pants, while female employees have been directed to wear formal Indian attire, such as sarees or salwar-kameez, during their working hours.

The administration declared that the crackdown on casual attire is accompanied by a new set of rules regarding social media usage. This decision follows a recent controversy involving a sub-divisional magistrate’s promotional posts on digital platforms. The government maintained that employees are strictly barred from sharing unauthorized documents or posting any content that tarnishes the image of the administration. Any public statement that reflects poorly on inter-government relations may invite immediate disciplinary proceedings, the order asserted.

The directive stated that government servants must refrain from expressing personal political or religious views on public forums like vlogs and blogs. Officials affirmed that any personal content shared online must be explicitly identified as a private view with no official connection to the state government. The Joint Secretary maintained that the goal is to ensure that employees uphold the highest standards of professional conduct at all times.

The state government declared that these rules are being implemented to ensure that the focus remains on public service and administrative efficiency. It was maintained that the Department of Personnel will monitor compliance across all divisions and departments. The authorities asserted that the invocation of the Central Civil Services Rules serves as a firm reminder to all staff members of their obligations toward the state and the public.
