BCCI sanctions Rahane amid Kolkata’s winless season start

KKR captain joins list of penalized leaders as team hits bottom of table

Chandigarh, April 15: Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has been fined INR 12 lakh after his side failed to maintain the required over-rate in their latest IPL 2026 fixture against Chennai Super Kings. The penalty follows a difficult night for the franchise, which continues to languish at the base of the points table without a single victory in five outings.

The league confirmed that the fine was issued because the team breached Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. As this was the first instance of a timing violation for the Kolkata-based team this season, the standard minimum fine was applied to the skipper.

“The captain has now been found guilty of breaching the Code of Conduct,” officials affirmed regarding the match played in Chennai. While Rahane is the latest to face such a fine, Shreyas Iyer remains the most heavily penalized captain this season, having incurred a INR 24 lakh fine for a second offense with Punjab Kings.

The 2026 campaign has proven exceptionally difficult for Kolkata, mirroring the team’s dismal nine-match losing streak in 2009. After falling to Mumbai and Hyderabad, the team’s only point came from a washed-out game at Eden Gardens. Subsequent failures to secure points against Lucknow and Chennai have left the squad searching for answers. This current slump matches a previous six-game losing streak recorded in 2019, marking a new low for the defending champions from two years ago.
