State Health Initiative Logs 522 Crore Rupees in Cashless Care

Expanded Benefit Framework Protects Punjab Residents from Catastrophic Medical Debt

CHANDIGARH, May 20 — A widespread medical security initiative in Punjab has provided treatment to over 1.59 lakh citizens, signaling a structural transition toward state-backed universal health coverage.

The latest operational updates for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana show that the program has successfully administered more than 3.11 lakh medical procedures, insulating ordinary households from the catastrophic spending patterns historically associated with private hospitalizations for heart conditions, cancer care, and complex surgeries. By provisioning 10 lakh rupees in annual cashless coverage per family, the state framework acts as an economic buffer for both low-income and middle-income residents.

Health department officials noted that the system successfully addresses a long-standing structural vulnerability where families were forced to liquidate assets or secure high-interest loans to cover sudden hospital bills.

“The scheme covers not just hospitalisation, but pre-treatment tests and post-care recovery, plugging the hidden financial leaks that often follow illness,” Dr. Balbir Singh, the state Health Minister, noted during a review of the program’s expansion.

The administration has issued more than 44 lakh digital health cards through a simplified enrollment strategy. Residents can secure coverage at neighborhood Common Service Centres and district hospitals by verifying their residency with basic regulatory documents.

The program utilizes 839 medical institutions to execute its extensive list of 2,300 specialized health packages, while maintaining a strict carve-out of 98 clinical treatments dedicated solely to public health facilities. Enrolment patterns indicate strong public trust, with high participation spanning from dense urban centers like Jalandhar to rural communities in the Tarn Taran district.

Public health analysts state that the integration of comprehensive diagnostic and post-hospitalization costs into a singular cashless card provides a level of financial predictability that is fundamentally altering how families manage long-term wellness and medical emergencies.
