New Delhi, Oct 5: The Supreme Court called for swift administrative action regarding procedural concerns raised over the trial judge in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri case, while asking the state government to expedite the designation of a new public prosecutor.
During the proceedings, a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant addressed submissions from High Court representatives concerning the setup of an administrative review mechanism. The Bench affirmed that the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court should proceed with necessary actions in line with earlier instructions, ensuring a confidential report is forwarded to the top court outlining the steps taken.
The directives follow submissions raised on behalf of the victims regarding court administrative processes and prosecutor transitions during the trial. Defense counsel maintained that the judicial officer had already examined a substantial majority of the key witnesses in the ongoing trial. The apex court reiterated its balanced stance, choosing not to comment on the specific claims while allowing time for administrative procedures to take their course.
