Centre Asked to Clarify Ethanol Content in Fuel Retail Supply

Testing of fuel samples in Karnataka prompts calls for public disclosure at petrol outlets.

New Delhi, Nov 7: The Union government has been called upon to clarify the actual ethanol content being mixed into petrol across retail outlets in India following recent quality tests conducted in Karnataka.

Raising the issue publicly, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi affirmed that tests carried out on petrol samples gathered from seven districts in the state indicated ethanol proportions higher than the official E20 target. The leader maintained that public transparency regarding fuel composition remains essential for vehicle owners.

Gandhi asserted that independent lab testing on fourteen samples from various fuel outlets, including both public sector undertakings and private distributors, registered blending figures above the standard limits. He declared that internal testing mechanisms by oil marketing companies had not highlighted these variations earlier.

Emphasizing the potential impact on daily commuters, Gandhi stated that unmonitored ethanol ratios could impair engine performance over time, causing lower fuel economy and rising repair bills for motorists.

The Congress leader maintained that the administration should initiate appropriate regulatory measures and ensure that all fuel pumps across the nation clearly display the specific ethanol content mixed in the petrol being sold.
