AAP Leaders Stand with Students on PU Senate Dissolution

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, November 7, 2025: The Central government’s attempt to dissolve the Senate of Punjab University was met with fierce opposition from the Aam Aadmi Party and student activists across the state on Tuesday. ASAP members and AAP leaders took to the streets, with slogans emphasizing Punjab’s rights and the sanctity of its institutions. “BJP cannot suppress Punjab’s universities. This is a fight for our honor,” one student leader told reporters.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the move as an assault on the cultural and educational heritage of Punjab. “Punjab University is not just an institution; it is Punjab’s soul. Those who attempt to weaken it challenge the very spirit of our state,” Mann said. He affirmed that the Punjab government would resist any effort to compromise the university’s autonomy.

AAP leaders alleged that the BJP’s strategy follows a pattern seen in states where the party lacks power: first weaken institutions, then place their loyalists. “Punjab is ready to resist. We will not let outsiders take control of our heritage,” a senior party leader said.

Students held sit-ins at campuses in Chandigarh, Patiala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Amritsar, warning that surrendering Punjab University would set a dangerous precedent for other state institutions. Leaders said the protests were disciplined and peaceful but determined, reflecting the youth’s resolve to defend their rights.

The AAP also engaged citizens and educators through social media, turning #SavePunjabUniversity into a statewide campaign. Party officials warned that if the notification is not revoked, a second wave of demonstrations—including statewide roadblocks—will be launched. “Punjab will not yield. Its people and government are united in defense of their institutions,” an AAP spokesperson said.
