Chandigarh, Aug 11: UT Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur will meet leaders of all major student organisations and Panjab University (PU) officials, including the Dean Students Welfare (DSW), on Monday to discuss security arrangements for the upcoming Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections.
The meeting, held annually before the election date is announced, will brief student leaders on security protocols and polling precautions. PU officials have sought extra safeguards following last year’s protests involving outsiders and the on-campus murder of student Aditya Thakur.
The DSW met UT Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav on Friday to share voter and booth details and request strict checks to prevent outsiders’ entry.
The push for heightened security follows the detention last week of five outsiders from campus, including alleged Lawrence Bishnoi gang associate Braham Dutt, linked to the Sector 33 firing case. Police said he was on campus for the launch of a new student outfit, ABVP Front, which emerged from a split in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad after a March scuffle. The group denies any connection to those detained.
A SOPU faction has alleged that Bishnoi’s associates remain active and that some members have received threats.
Police have intensified campus patrols and conducted surprise hostel raids over the weekend, detaining several outsiders. Officials said inspections will continue until elections are announced, and additional restrictions are likely to be declared after Monday’s meeting.
