Air India pilot fails alcohol test before Canada flight

by TheReportingTimes

Toronto/New Delhi, Jan 2: An Air India pilot was removed from duty after failing two alcohol breath tests conducted by Canadian police at Vancouver International Airport, prompting Canada’s transport regulator to seek a formal investigation by the airline, a source familiar with the matter said.

The pilot had reported for duty on a scheduled flight from Vancouver to Delhi on December 23 when the incident occurred. Following the failed tests, the pilot was asked to leave the aircraft, leading to a delay in departure.

In a letter to Air India, Transport Canada termed the incident a “serious matter” and indicated that enforcement action could follow, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Air India said the flight was eventually operated after an alternate pilot was brought in.

“The pilot has been taken off flying duties during the process of enquiry,” the airline said. “Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations.”

The airline said strict disciplinary action would be taken if violations are confirmed.

Transport Canada has asked Air India to submit its investigation findings and outline corrective measures by January 26. The regulator did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside business hours.

The episode adds to growing scrutiny of Air India’s safety practices. India’s aviation regulator has been closely monitoring the airline since a fatal Boeing Dreamliner crash on June 12 killed 260 people.

Earlier this week, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued warning notices to four Air India pilots over regulatory compliance and flight crew decision-making. According to the notices dated December 29, the pilots accepted a Boeing 787 aircraft for long-haul operations despite being aware of repeated technical snags and existing system issues.

Air India was privatised in 2022 and is now owned by Tata Group in partnership with Singapore Airlines.
