New Delhi, May 2: Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari on Friday assumed charge as the new Vice Chief of the Air Staff, following the retirement of Air Marshal S P Dharkar, who superannuated on April 30.

Prior to his elevation, Air Marshal Tiwari served as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the South Western Air Command (SWAC) headquartered in Gandhinagar, a post he had held since May 2023.

Commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in June 1986, Air Marshal Tiwari is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and a recipient of the President’s Gold Medal.

A decorated aviator with extensive experience, he has flown a wide range of aircraft and holds credentials as a qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot. According to the Ministry of Defence, his expertise includes operational testing of various weapons and systems, particularly on the Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft.

The Ministry also noted that Air Marshal Tiwari played a key role in several critical missions during the 1999 Kargil conflict. His operational contributions and leadership have been widely recognised within the defence establishment.

With nearly four decades of service, Air Marshal Tiwari brings to his new role deep operational insight and strategic acumen at a time when the Indian Air Force is undergoing rapid modernisation and capability enhancement.
