Amritsar Launches Citywide Clean-Up Drive

by TheReportingTimes

AMRITSAR, July 29: To improve its national cleanliness ranking and urban aesthetics, the Amritsar Municipal Corporation (MC) on Monday launched a week-long beautification and civic improvement drive, described as the largest of its kind undertaken by the city.

The campaign was formally flagged off at the Golden Gate on GT Road, a key entry point into the city, by MC Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh, in the presence of religious leader Baba Kashmir Singh of Dera Baba Bhuriwale, local MLAs, and civic officials. The drive will be conducted across all municipal zones and conclude at Darbar Sahib, the spiritual heart of the city.

“This is not just a sanitation exercise — it is a multi-departmental civic overhaul,” said Commissioner Aulakh at the launch. “We’re addressing everything from road repairs to lighting issues, with the goal of making Amritsar cleaner, greener, and better managed.”

Unlike previous cleanliness efforts that focused primarily on sweeping and garbage collection, the current campaign brings together multiple MC departments for a coordinated push. Planned work includes civil repairs such as footpath restoration, road patchwork, improvement of central verges, and horticultural activities to enhance the city’s green cover.

The campaign also includes sewer cleaning, manhole repairs, and fixing malfunctioning streetlights, while teams from the estate and advertisement departments will remove illegal encroachments and unauthorized hoardings that detract from the city’s visual appeal.

Aulakh said the campaign is designed to be participatory, urging resident welfare associations, NGOs, social organisations, and local businesses to contribute. “Each day of the campaign will be held in collaboration with a different institution. We want citizens to not just watch, but to engage — this is their city,” he said.

Institutions willing to participate have been encouraged to visit the MC office and discuss how they can assist in beautifying and maintaining their localities. The commissioner stressed that the ultimate objective is to foster collective ownership and build momentum for ongoing civic responsibility.

“These efforts won’t stop here. This campaign is part of a larger vision. Our aim is to make Amritsar one of the most beautiful and well-managed cities in the country,” Aulakh said.

The seven-day initiative will serve as both a clean-up mission and a public engagement model, combining physical upgrades with citizen-driven development — a blueprint the civic body hopes to replicate regularly.
