Amritsar, Sept 9 – Punjab police on Monday busted a heroin trafficking cartel, arresting notorious smuggler Soni Singh, alias Soni, along with four associates, and seizing 8.1 kg of heroin, officials said.
The other arrested individuals were identified as Gursewak Singh, Vishaldeep Singh alias Gola, Gurpreet Singh, and Arshdeep Singh, all residents of Ajnala in Amritsar. Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the syndicate operated from Pakistan, using drones to deliver large consignments of heroin into Indian territory. Hotels were reportedly used as storage and distribution points for the contraband.
Amritsar Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Soni Singh, who has six prior NDPS Act cases and was released from jail in June, had delivered nearly 30 kg of heroin via drones before his arrest. He was apprehended on the outskirts of the city with 150 grams of heroin and cash.
Following Soni’s disclosures, police arrested his associate Gursewak Singh with 8.037 kg of heroin. Subsequent investigations led to the capture of the remaining members of the smuggling module.
A case has been registered under Sections 21-B, 27-A, 21-C, and 29 of the NDPS Act at Chheharta police station. Officials said further arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days as investigations continue to map the syndicate’s supply chain and financial network.
