Astha Poonia Becomes Navy’s First Woman Fighter Pilot

by TheReportingTimes

Visakhapatnam, July 4: In a historic first for the Indian Navy, Sub Lieutenant Astha Poonia has become the first woman fighter pilot to be inducted into the fighter stream of Naval Aviation, marking a major milestone in the Navy’s efforts to promote gender equality and operational inclusivity.

The Indian Navy announced that Sub Lt Poonia has successfully completed the Basic ‘Hawk Conversion Course’ at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, paving the way for her deployment on carrier-based fighter jets in future operations.

“This is a significant step towards fostering Nari Shakti in our Armed Forces,” the Navy said in an official statement. “Her induction into the fighter stream demonstrates the Indian Navy’s commitment to a culture of equality, merit, and opportunity.”

While the Navy has already inducted women officers as pilots and air operations officers on maritime reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters, Sub Lt Poonia is the first to be streamed into the elite fighter jet division—traditionally operated from aircraft carriers.

The move aligns with broader trends in the Indian Armed Forces aimed at integrating women into combat and operational roles. It also follows similar landmark achievements in the Indian Air Force and Army.

Sub Lt Poonia’s entry into this high-performance combat domain is being hailed not just as a personal triumph, but a symbolic leap for women across the services.
