Bajwa raises concern over spate of killings in Punjab

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, January 6 — Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday voiced concern over a series of recent murders in the state, saying the incidents point to the need for a stronger and more visible law enforcement response.

Bajwa said that three killings reported within a short span had unsettled residents in different parts of Punjab. “People expect safety and stability. Any perception of insecurity needs to be addressed without delay,” he said in a statement.

Referring to specific cases, Bajwa mentioned the daylight killing of a former kabaddi player in Manuke, the murder of an AAP-linked sarpanch during a wedding function in Amritsar, and the death of young Congress leader Umarseer Singh alias Sheera Bhinder in Moga district.

“The circumstances of these incidents indicate that criminal elements are operating with confidence. This is a matter of concern and calls for firm administrative attention,” Bajwa said.

He added that policing institutions must be strengthened and supported to deal with organised crime and the circulation of illegal weapons. “Public confidence depends on timely action and effective enforcement,” he noted.

The Congress leader said political leadership carries moral responsibility during challenging times. “The government must introspect and ensure that corrective steps are taken to reassure citizens and restore faith in the system,” Bajwa said.
