Amritsar, July 8 – Lovjit Kaur, sister-in-law of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, was arrested late Monday night at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport while attempting to flee to Australia, police said Tuesday.
Lovjit was detained after immigration officials flagged her name during routine checks, as a Lookout Circular (LOC) had been issued against her in a recent murder case. She was handed over to Batala police shortly after being intercepted at the airport.
“She was attempting to leave the country despite being named in an ongoing murder investigation,” said a senior police official. “Acting on the LOC, airport authorities immediately alerted us, and we took her into custody.”
According to sources, Lovjit had recently travelled to Batala to offer condolences following the death of her mother-in-law, Harjeet Kaur. Harjeet and another relative, Karmveer Singh, were gunned down a few weeks ago in a targeted shooting believed to be linked to gang rivalries.
Lovjit is wanted in connection with the murder of gangster Gurpreet Singh alias Gora Bariar, and was formally named in the case by Batala police days ago. Authorities suspect she may have played a role in the planning or facilitation of the crime.
“We are interrogating her to establish her involvement in the case and any links she may have with other accused,” a Batala police officer said. “She will be produced in court soon, and we will seek her remand for further questioning.”
Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, considered one of Punjab’s most feared gangsters, is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam under heavy security.
Lovjit’s arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on Bhagwanpuria’s associates and family members, following a string of high-profile crimes and escalating gang violence in Punjab.
