Bikram Majithia leaves Nabha Jail in open jeep after bail

Akali workers welcome Majithia

Patiala, Feb 3: Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia resumed his public life on Tuesday after being released from Nabha Jail. Following the Supreme Court’s bail order in a disproportionate assets case, the former minister emerged from the facility, signaled to his supporters by twirling his moustache, and joined a large procession of party faithful.

While the bail was granted on Monday, Majithia remained in custody until Tuesday afternoon while his lawyers finalized paperwork within the prison complex. His wife and a significant number of party cadres remained on-site during the wait. Following his release, the leader was seen atop an open vehicle, surrounded by a convoy of supporters heading toward Patiala.

The case against the Akali leader, initiated by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in June, involves a detailed investigation into financial dealings. However, his legal team successfully argued against several proposed bail conditions.

“The Punjab government had approached the court seeking conditions that would bar the SAD leader from entering Punjab,” Damanbir Sobti, Majithia’s lawyer, said. He noted that the court’s refusal to grant such a request allowed for an unconditional return to his home state.

Law enforcement agencies maintained a strict vigil at the site to prevent any disruption to public order as the crowds grew. The release marks a significant moment for the SAD, as Majithia had been in custody since his arrest last summer following a lengthy probe rooted in a 2021 special investigation.
