Chandigarh, Jan 16: The Bharatiya Janata Party significantly expanded its Punjab leadership on Friday, welcoming four prominent politicians into its fold as part of an aggressive strategy for the 2027 state elections. The move was highlighted by the entry of Prof Onkar Singh, who previously served in the inner circle of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar.
The event, attended by Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu and senior leader Ashwani Sharma, showcased the BJP’s attempt to position itself as the primary challenger to the current government. The inclusion of Jagmeet Singh Brar, a politician with decades of experience in the Congress and Akali Dal, adds a seasoned tactical voice to the party’s state unit.
“The BJP parivaar is continuously growing,” Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar noted, while asserting that the party is on track to form the government in 2027. He mentioned that the current administration is running the state without effective governance, particularly regarding the safety of residents.
The defection of Prof Onkar Singh has caused ripples in the political circuit, especially in the Dhuri and Lambi regions where he holds significant influence. Ground-level observers mentioned that his move reflects a growing discontent within the ruling party’s original volunteer base.
Welcoming the leaders, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini said the new entrants had joined with the welfare of Punjab in mind. He directly said that the state’s current climate is discouraging investment and noted that only a BJP-led government could restore the social fabric and ensure progress.
The party announced that this expansion is only the beginning of their pre-election push. Ground workers noted that the new leadership will immediately be integrated into state-wide campaigns to address public services and administrative failures.
