BJP Protest in Sirmaur Over Alleged Abduction

by TheReportingTimes

MAJRA (SIRMAUR), June 14: Defying prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), BJP state president Dr. Rajeev Bindal on Saturday led a sit-in protest in Sirmaur’s Majra area, demanding justice in an alleged case of abduction involving a minor girl — a case that has triggered sharp communal tensions in the region.

The district administration had enforced restrictions late Friday night across Majra and nearby villages of Kiratpur, Meliyon, Fatehpur, and Mishrawala to prevent unrest. Despite the ban on public gatherings of more than five persons, a large crowd—comprising the girl’s relatives and supporters—assembled early this morning to protest, pressing for swift action and accountability.

According to local sources, the girl was allegedly taken away by a youth from another community. While officials have not officially confirmed her recovery, unverified reports suggest she may soon be reunited with her family.

The protest site remains under tight security, with approximately 150 police personnel deployed, including three Deputy Superintendents of Police—Manvinder Thakur, Ramakant Thakur, and Vidya Negi. Paonta Sahib SDM Gunjeet Singh Cheema is also supervising operations on the ground. Additional security reinforcements have been positioned around the local police station to prevent any flare-up.

Tensions escalated further when Dr. Bindal and SDM Cheema engaged in a heated exchange. Bindal criticized the administration’s handling of the case and objected to the SDM’s baton being visible at the protest. In return, Cheema questioned the protest’s peaceful nature, citing that some women in the gathering carried sticks.

“The administration has failed to act decisively. People are angry, and their voices must be heard,” Bindal said during the demonstration.

Friday evening had already seen rising tempers when a group of protesters reportedly bypassed police barricades and reached the residence of the accused youth. The confrontation led to stone-pelting from both sides, intensifying tensions.

The situation in Majra remains volatile, with officials continuing to enforce Section 163 to prevent further unrest. Authorities said they are monitoring developments closely, aiming to defuse tensions and restore normalcy.
