BKU to protest July 25 over fertiliser shortage

by TheReportingTimes

Yamunanagar, July 21: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) has announced a protest on July 25 at the Agriculture Department office in Yamunanagar over the ongoing shortage of fertilisers, particularly diammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea. Farmers have also threatened to block roads if the issue remains unresolved.

Speaking at a meeting held in Dhaurang village, BKU’s Yamunanagar district president Subhash Gurjar said the crisis had severely affected farmers during the sowing season. “There is no DAP and urea available anywhere in the state, including Yamunanagar,” Gurjar said. “Farmers are holding protests in Kurukshetra, Pehowa, Hisar and several other districts. The situation is alarming.”

He alleged that for the past few years, fertilisers have been distributed through police stations, forcing women and elderly to wait in long queues—something he described as humiliating and unacceptable.

Calling the government “anti-farmer,” Gurjar accused Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other ministers of repeatedly misleading the public. “They lie about fertiliser availability every time. The truth is that there is no fertiliser when crops need to be sown. And when the produce reaches the market, farmers don’t get fair prices either,” he said.

Gurjar claimed the government’s approach was pushing farmers away from agriculture, leaving them helpless during crucial periods of cultivation. He called for immediate action, urging authorities to ensure timely supply of fertilisers across Haryana.

“The government must act now and make proper arrangements, or we will be left with no option but to escalate our protest,” Gurjar warned.

The BKU protest is expected to draw farmers from across the district, with fertiliser shortages becoming a recurring grievance in Haryana’s agricultural belt.
