Bomb threats trigger early closure of Jalandhar schools

JALANDHAR, Dec 15 — Panic briefly gripped parts of Jalandhar on Monday after bomb threat emails were sent to 11 schools, forcing authorities to order early closures and deploy bomb disposal teams, officials said.

Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur said police began receiving information about the threats around 10 a.m. and immediately dispatched teams to the affected schools.

“Our police teams reached the schools as soon as we started getting information,” Kaur said. “Bomb sabotage teams were deployed, and we also arranged additional forces as a precautionary measure.”

Among the schools that initially reported the emails were St. Joseph’s Convent School, IVY World School and Sanskriti KMV School. Similar threat messages were later reported by eight other schools across the city.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal said a cybercrime FIR has been registered to trace the source of the emails.

“So far, the emails do not seem genuine as they are in the same format,” Aggarwal said. “Our teams are checking their origin. These threats are on the same lines as those recently received in Amritsar.”

Schools were closed around noon, and parents were informed through official messaging channels. Many parents gathered outside campuses to pick up their children as buses and vans were dispatched earlier than scheduled.

In a message sent to parents, St. Joseph’s Convent School urged calm, saying, “Please do not pay attention to any rumours. Your children are safe with us.”

Officials said thorough searches were conducted at all affected schools and no suspicious material was found. Police said investigations are continuing to identify those behind the emails.
