Border Security Seizures Surge Along Punjab Frontier

Heroin and arms recoveries spike as agencies target narco-terror networks

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 12: Narcotics and weapons seizures along the international border in Punjab have seen a massive rise in the opening months of the year, according to recent BSF data. Personnel recovered 331 kg of heroin in just 100 days, nearly matching the figures from previous full calendar years. Officials stated that the 414 kg recovered in 2025 and 283 kg in 2024 show a clear pattern of escalating smuggling attempts from across the border.

The tactical landscape has shifted toward the use of technology, with 47 drones intercepted so far this year. Security experts asserted that smugglers are increasingly using GPS-programmed precision drops and low-altitude flights to evade traditional patrols. “Smugglers were relying heavily on unmanned vehicles to push drugs across the border,” a security official stated while discussing the evolving methods used by criminal networks.

The influx of illegal arms also remains a primary concern for regional stability. BSF teams have confiscated 58 weapons and 93 magazines this year, maintaining a high rate of interdiction following the 201 weapons seized in 2025. A senior counter-intelligence official declared that these efforts are part of a broader narco-terror strategy aimed at fueling illegal activities. He affirmed that the synergy between various agencies is crucial in safeguarding the border against these multi-layered threats.

Legal action against those involved in the trade has intensified, with 110 Indian smugglers taken into custody during the first quarter. The BSF also reported the apprehension of several foreign nationals and the neutralisation of three intruders during active operations. These enforcement milestones come as agencies ramp up their intelligence-driven strategies to disrupt sophisticated smuggling routes.

A senior BSF official affirmed that the force has improved its rapid response capabilities and integrated better technological deployment to monitor the border. He maintained that the high volume of seizures is a direct result of increased vigilance and better coordination with the Punjab Police. Officials stated that while traditional detection methods face new challenges, the shift toward intelligence-based interdiction is proving effective in curbing cross-border criminal activities.
