CHAMBA, May 10– In response to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, security has been sharply reinforced across the border areas of Chamba, where the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and local police are maintaining heightened vigilance along the 220-kilometer frontier shared with Jammu and Kashmir.
Security deployments now include coordinated patrols by ITBP units, state police battalions, and Special Police Officers (SPOs), with a continuous watch over sensitive zones. “Security personnel from the police and ITBP are maintaining round-the-clock patrols. Every vehicle entering the district from other states is being thoroughly checked. If needed, further reinforcements will be made,” said Abhishek Yadav, Superintendent of Police, Chamba.
Each police station in the border belt has been bolstered with ITBP presence, and mobile patrols are scanning for suspicious movement across strategic locations. Surveillance is particularly tight at border entry points such as Langera, Khundi Maral, and Chuhan Sindhara. The adjoining Punjab border has also come under rigorous monitoring.
“Security agencies are especially alert at key border entry points,” Yadav added, underlining the intensified inspection regime underway. Military forces may be brought in if the situation demands additional support, officials noted.
Vehicular traffic from outside the district is being thoroughly screened. Interstate buses arriving in Chamba are undergoing strict checks before being permitted entry.
As a precautionary step, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has suspended its bus services from Chamba to the Punjab cities of Pathankot and Amritsar. However, all other state and inter-district services remain unaffected, with buses rerouted through alternate corridors.
“HRTC buses plying on the Pathankot and Amritsar routes have been temporarily suspended. All other interstate and inter-district routes are operating as scheduled, though buses that used to go via Pathankot are now being rerouted,” confirmed Shugal Singh, Regional Manager of HRTC Chamba.
Authorities have not specified the duration of these enhanced security measures, but officials suggested the arrangements will remain in place as long as regional tensions persist.
