LAHAUL AND SPITI, May 24 — After being blocked for seven months due to heavy snowfall, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has reopened the vital Gramphu-Losar stretch on the Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu highway, re-establishing a critical route to Spiti valley via Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft).
The strategic road had remained shut since November, severing access to Spiti from the Manali and Lahaul side. However, the valley remained reachable from Kinnaur via Shimla during the winter months.
With snow now cleared and the stretch restored, connectivity from Manali to Spiti has resumed, although formal clearance for civilian traffic is still pending. A few 4×4 vehicles have managed to traverse the route from Spiti toward Manali, but the district administration is awaiting a final go-ahead from the BRO to open the road to the public.
The route’s reopening is expected to significantly revive tourism in the region. Known for its stark high-altitude beauty, monasteries and adventure trails, Spiti valley draws thousands of visitors each year. The road also serves as a critical artery for local mobility and the transport of essential supplies.
Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana praised the BRO’s swift and determined efforts. “The BRO’s dedication has once again ensured timely clearance of the road and the restoration of access to this remote and beautiful region,” she said. “Soon, tourists will be able to travel from Manali and Lahaul to Spiti, which will bring a major boost to the local economy.”
BRO officials confirmed that snow clearance and basic roadwork have been completed under harsh and challenging conditions. The route’s reopening ahead of peak summer season is seen as a timely boost for both tourism and residents of the remote valley.
