Canada Govt Updates Immigration Rules to Ease Business, Family Travel

Revised income criteria for Super Visas and work permit exemptions set to begin this month

Ottawa, March 22: Significant changes to Canada’s immigration landscape are set to take effect, offering new flexibilities for international business travelers and families. The Department of Immigration has introduced a framework that permits foreign nationals to conduct specific business activities in Canada without a work permit, while also easing the financial hurdles associated with the popular Super Visa for families.

The revised guidelines for business visitors emphasize that while these individuals may engage in training or high-level commerce, they must not displace Canadian workers. The department noted that for a visitor to remain exempt from work permit requirements, their primary income must be issued from a source outside of Canada. These rules apply to those coming to the country to inspect equipment, attend training sessions at Canadian units, or negotiate the sale of goods.

Regarding family reunification, the government affirmed that starting March 31, all Super Visa applications will be assessed under a more inclusive income model. This change allows the combined financial resources of both the Canadian sponsor and the visiting parents or grandparents to meet the eligibility threshold.

“This adjustment is intended to make it easier for families to stay together for longer durations,” the department declared in its latest policy update.

For business travelers, visa officers have been instructed to grant multiple-entry visas to those who meet the strict criteria of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. Documentation requirements include proof of professional standing and a clear criminal history. The department asserted that while the rules are becoming more flexible, the integrity of the Canadian labor market remains a priority, and all applicants must prove that their employer is subsidizing their entire stay.
