Kapurthala, October 29: Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested a civilian worker employed at the Kapurthala Army Cantonment on charges of spying for Pakistan, following a tip-off from intelligence agencies, officials confirmed.
The accused, Raja, a resident of Mushakved village, worked as a contractual Safai Sewak inside the cantonment. He was detained near Y-Point, Kanjali, during a routine patrol led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, IPS. During questioning, police allegedly found incriminating evidence on his mobile phone indicating communication with contacts across the border.
“Preliminary investigation points to the accused sharing images of restricted Army areas and passing on sensitive information related to defence establishments,” SSP Toora mentioned. He added that there were indications Raja had received monetary compensation from Pakistani handlers for supplying classified material.
Officials described the incident as a “serious national security breach,” noting that any compromise of such information could endanger defence preparedness. Police sources said the accused appeared to have operated independently, but the probe will determine whether others were involved.
An FIR under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been filed at Police Station Kotwali, Kapurthala. Raja remains in custody while investigators examine the extent of the data shared and the possible network behind the alleged espionage.
