New Delhi, Aug 10: Delhi Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from Rajasthan for allegedly defrauding an elderly woman of over Rs 14 lakh by exploiting his access to her mobile phone. The accused, Deepak Kumar Saini, originally from Chokdi village in Rajasthan, worked as a caretaker for Manjusha Rani Gupta at her residence in Royal Residency, Dwarka, southwest Delhi.
According to police, Gupta filed a complaint stating that Saini misused his occasional access to her phone between January 30 and June 6 to install financial applications and retrieve one-time passwords (OTPs). He then transferred money from her bank account to his own Paytm account without her knowledge, ultimately siphoning Rs 14.35 lakh.
Saini had been employed at Gupta’s home since March 2020. Police investigations traced the fraud through analysis of call records, customer application forms, bank transactions, and IP logs. An officer said, “It was also discovered that he was involved in online gambling.”
Saini was arrested in Sikar, Rajasthan, and police seized his mobile phone, which contained evidence of both the fraudulent transactions and gambling activity. During interrogation, Saini admitted to losing most of the stolen money through gambling, while the remainder was reportedly spent in clubs and hotels.
Authorities are actively working to trace and recover the defrauded funds.
