Chandigarh, Feb 19: The Union Government has sanctioned ₹1,463.95 crore for a major road infrastructure project in Punjab, designed to streamline traffic flow between the Chandigarh Tricity and Himachal Pradesh. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari affirmed on Thursday that the funds will be utilized to construct a six-lane, access-controlled greenfield spur. This new corridor will connect the Ambala–Chandigarh section of National Highway 205A directly to the Zirakpur Bypass.
The Minister maintained that the project is a strategic response to the rising vehicular load on existing highways like NH-44 and NH-152. By creating a dedicated bypass for heavy through-traffic, the initiative seeks to alleviate the frequent bottlenecks currently witnessed at urban junctions in Mohali, Chandigarh, and Panchkula. “The project is designed to decongest major urban junctions by diverting heavy through-traffic away from city roads,” the Minister stated in a social media update.
Beyond localized relief, the new spur is expected to serve as a vital link for regional travel. Officials declared that the infrastructure will facilitate smoother and faster transit toward Shimla, providing a significant advantage for both daily commuters and the tourism sector. The project is being integrated into the broader Tricity Ring Road plan, which aims to provide a comprehensive solution to the region’s growing transportation needs.
Economic integration is another key goal of the sanctioned investment. The Minister asserted that the improved connectivity will enable the quicker movement of goods and passengers, thereby strengthening the local economy. He noted that the development is an essential step toward supporting urban expansion and improving overall transport efficiency across northern India.
