Chandigarh, Aug 10: — A senior doctor became the latest victim of chain snatching outside her home in Sector 24 A early Friday morning, police said. Dr. Sukanya Mitra, 64, reported that at approximately 6:30 a.m., two young men on a motorcycle approached her, engaged her in an unsolicited conversation, and abruptly snatched her gold chain before speeding away.

“I could not catch the motorcycle’s registration number, but I am confident I would recognize the culprits if they were brought before me,” Dr. Mitra told authorities. She confirmed she was not injured and declined medical examination.

At 6:47 a.m., Sub-Inspector Jagtar Singh, in charge of the Sector 24 police post, received a call reporting the incident. Based on the initial statement and investigation, police registered a case under Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to snatching. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to help identify the suspects.

Meanwhile, in Panchkula, police apprehended a man and a woman for allegedly snatching a mobile phone at knifepoint near the Sector 7/8 dividing road late Friday night.

Mukesh Singh, a cook from Manimajra, was waiting at a bus stop near midnight when the female suspect approached him with a knife pressed against his back and forcibly took his phone, police said.

Responding swiftly, police established checkpoints and secured the area. They found the accused, identified as Laxman, 26, and Karina, 20, both residents of Rajiv Colony, near Shalimar Chowk in Sector 7. Both were intoxicated at the time of arrest, and the stolen phone was recovered from nearby bushes.

“The arrest was made within two hours of the incident,” a police spokesperson stated. Both suspects were charged under the relevant BNS sections at the Sector 7 police station and were remanded to judicial custody following a court appearance on Saturday.

These incidents have raised concerns among local residents about increasing street crimes in the area, prompting calls for enhanced police vigilance.
