Chandigarh Club executive gets bail in extortion case linked to ₹7-crore demand

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, November 1: A Chandigarh court has granted bail to Vikas Bector, an executive member of the Chandigarh Club, who was arrested last week in connection with an alleged ₹7-crore extortion case filed by city-based advocate Gaurav Dheer, police said.

Bector, who was taken into custody on October 25, was accused of conspiring with others to threaten Dheer into withdrawing a case lodged against him in December 2024. Police said the complaint was filed under Sections 308(3) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Mullanpur police station.

According to the FIR, Dheer was at his father’s construction office in New Chandigarh on August 31 when he received a call from Raman Aggarwal, a Panchkula-based businessman. Aggarwal allegedly demanded ₹6–7 crore, saying the money was to be handed over to Bector, and warned that Dheer would face “serious consequences” if he refused.

In his complaint, Dheer stated that Aggarwal openly admitted the demand was extortion and mentioned that a third person, Nitin Goel, would contact him later to press for payment.

“Based on the information provided, we found corroborative evidence linking Bector to the extortion attempt,” a senior police officer said. “He was arrested and produced in court after due verification.”

Police added that Bector was already facing five other FIRs and had earlier been declared a proclaimed offender in a 2012 case. His arrest followed a detailed review of his criminal background and the extortion complaint.

The court, after hearing both sides, granted Bector bail earlier this week. Investigation against Aggarwal and Goel is continuing, the police spokesperson said, adding that more arrests could follow.
