CHANDIGARH: With the notification of the UT Chandigarh Tenancy Rules, 2026, the administration has established a modernized legal structure governing tenancy agreements, rent revisions, and property possession. The regulations mandate joint or individual online submission of tenancy documents, supported by dedicated digital tools and strict privacy controls that restrict document access exclusively to authorized officials and concerned parties.

The rules detail clear protocols for financial and operational contingencies, allowing tenants to deposit rent directly with the Rent Authority if a landlord refuses electronic payments for two consecutive months. Additionally, the legal framework specifies interest calculation rates based on the State Bank of India’s highest Marginal Cost of Lending Rate plus two percent for arrears or security refunds. The Rent Tribunal is mandated to resolve appeals within sixty days, ensuring expedited resolution of rental disputes throughout the city.
