Chandigarh, 19 August — A CBI special court on Monday convicted head constable Ram Kumar in a 2017 bribery case, holding him guilty under Section 7 and Section 13(1)(d)(ii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, punishable under Section 13(2).
Special Judge Alka Malik pronounced the verdict and sent Kumar, who had been out on bail, to judicial custody. The court will announce the quantum of sentence on August 20.
According to the prosecution, Kumar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while accepting a bribe of ₹10,000 on May 23, 2017. At the time, he was posted at Sarangpur police station and reporting to SHO Inspector Shadi Lal.
The case stemmed from a March 3, 2017 FIR in which a woman and her husband were booked for assaulting their relative, Guru Narain. Kumar was the investigating officer in the case.
The CBI said Kumar initially demanded ₹18,000 from the complainant to extend “favour” in the investigation. The amount was later settled at ₹10,000. Acting on a complaint, CBI sleuths laid a trap and caught Kumar red-handed while accepting the money, recovering the bribe from his possession.
The conviction marks another graft case brought to closure by the CBI after years of trial.
