Chandigarh, Aug 14: Chandigarh Police Operations Cell has arrested four persons in a pre-Independence Day crackdown on inter-state arms suppliers and drug peddlers. The accused — Ajit Singh, Amar Singh, Shamshad Ali and Rishab Dev — were nabbed from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh. Police recovered 1.790 kg charas, 53.90 gm heroin, one pistol and one country-made katta from their possession.

A police spokesperson said an active member and sharp shooter of Harpreet, alias Happy Gang, was among those arrested, averting a possible gang war. Kingpins of the gang are allegedly operating from abroad, with Harpreet managing activities from Portugal and another associate, Gurjant Janta, reportedly in Italy.

During interrogation, Ajit Singh revealed that he had been working as a hotel waiter in Panchkula when he came in contact with a drug peddler and began supplying drugs in the tricity. Shamshad Ali, a proclaimed offender in attempt to murder and Arms Act cases, disclosed that he received illegal weapons from Harpreet for distribution to other members in the tricity.

All four accused have been remanded to four days’ police custody.
