MOHALI, Aug. 22 — The Vigilance Bureau on Friday filed a chargesheet against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a Prevention of Corruption Act case, submitting a massive 40,000-page document supported by more than 200 witnesses.
The chargesheet was brought to the Mohali court in four sealed trunks, delivered in a pick-up truck around 3:30 p.m. Officials said it forms the backbone of the bureau’s case against the former Punjab cabinet minister.
Majithia, arrested by the Vigilance Bureau from his Amritsar residence on June 25, remains lodged in New Nabha Jail near Patiala under judicial custody. His bail plea was dismissed by a Mohali court earlier this month.
According to the prosecution, the case revolves around financial records of companies including Saraya Industries Limited, which investigators allege reflect “ill-gotten money” during Majithia’s tenure as a public servant until January 2009.
Defense counsel has contested the allegations, arguing that the disputed sums represent legitimate loans or business transactions between companies rather than proceeds of corruption.
The chargesheet marks a significant step in the case, which has drawn close scrutiny in Punjab’s political circles given Majithia’s standing in the Shiromani Akali Dal and his past tenure in the state cabinet.
