Chandigarh, 28 May 2025 – Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed all deputy commissioners (DCs) and superintending engineers to intensify drain-cleaning operations across the state and ensure their completion before June 15, in preparation for the upcoming monsoon.
Chairing a review meeting on short-term flood protection and internal drain clearance, Saini expressed concern over slow progress and warned that “strict action” would follow any negligence. He ordered DCs to draw up immediate work schedules and assign officers to monitor the efforts on the ground.
“There’s very little time left. The current pace is not acceptable,” the CM said, adding that Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi and senior officials will conduct another progress review on June 10.
Saini also took stock of the de-silting work in Tangri and Markanda rivers and reviewed an ambitious flood-control plan involving the SYL and Hansi-Butana Link Canals. The irrigation department aims to divert drain and Ghaggar River water into the canals, storing excess water during monsoon using temporary barriers.
The initiative, officials said, will help control floods, recharge groundwater, and enhance irrigation capabilities in water-scarce areas.
