CM Saini Vows Justice in IPS Officer’s Death Case

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, October 11 — Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday pledged a fair and transparent investigation into the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, assuring that those responsible, “no matter how influential,” would face strict action.

Speaking at the BJP state executive meeting in Panchkula, Saini said the state government was committed to ensuring justice for the late officer’s family. “This is an unfortunate incident. The family has demanded justice. We have assured them there will be a thorough inquiry and that action will be taken against the accused. There should not be politics on such sensitive issues,” the Chief Minister said, as party members observed a two-minute silence in memory of the officer.

Reiterating his commitment, Saini added, “No matter how influential the culprit, they won’t be spared. Our government will work to deliver justice.” He said he was in touch with the central government and monitoring the developments personally.

Saini recalled that he was in Japan leading an official delegation — which included the officer’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar — when he received the news of Kumar’s death. “I immediately reached out to console her and directed officials to extend every possible assistance,” he noted.

The Chief Minister’s statement came on a day of heightened political activity, with several leaders from the Opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party visiting the family in Chandigarh to express solidarity. Those who met Amneet Kumar at her Sector 24 residence included Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala, Deepender Singh Hooda, Charanjit Singh Channi, and Kumari Selja, as well as AAP leader Manish Sisodia.

Earlier, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi had written to Amneet Kumar, terming the IPS officer’s death “a reminder that the prejudiced and biased attitude of those in power deprives even the most senior officials of social justice.”

The 52-year-old officer, a 2001-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, was serving as Inspector General at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak’s Sunaria. He was found dead with a gunshot wound at his Sector 11, Chandigarh residence on October 7.

Chandigarh Police have constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the death. However, the family has so far withheld consent for a post-mortem, citing “incomplete information” in the FIR.

In a nine-page note reportedly recovered from the scene, Kumar alleged sustained “mental harassment and humiliation” by senior police officers. He named eight IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, accusing them of targeting him. Following the controversy, the Haryana government transferred SP Bijarniya on Saturday.

Officials said the investigation would consider all angles, including allegations made in the note. Meanwhile, political leaders from across party lines have called for an impartial inquiry to ensure justice for the deceased officer and his family.
