Cold Spell Hits Chandigarh as Night Mercury Plunges

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Nov 7: Chandigarh woke up to a chilly Thursday, with the night temperature dropping to 12.8°C, marking the lowest this season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. The fall followed Wednesday’s minimum of 16.4°C, slipping 1.8°C below the seasonal average.

“The dip was anticipated following Tuesday night’s Western Disturbance, which brought light rainfall to the region,” said Surender Paul, IMD director for Chandigarh. “Chandigarh recorded 0.6 mm rain. Cold Northwesterly winds are now blowing, and temperatures will likely continue to fall sharply in the coming days.”

Maximum temperatures also cooled, falling from 29.7°C on Wednesday to 28.3°C on Thursday, roughly a degree below normal. Normally, temperatures decline further towards the end of November; last year, Chandigarh had recorded 8.7°C on November 29. Over the next three days, the city is expected to experience maximum temperatures between 26°C and 27°C, and minimums around 11°C to 12°C.

Despite Gurpurb firecrackers lighting up the city, air quality stayed moderate. The Central Pollution Control Board’s AQI bulletin reported 156 for Chandigarh. In contrast, nearby Panchkula recorded an AQI of 275, considered poor.

Above-average rainfall is also expected this month, IMD said. “November is usually dry, but after above-normal rain in October, this trend seems likely to continue,” Paul noted. “This forecast, based on global meteorological patterns, indicates above-normal rainfall for the region.” The early-season Western Disturbance already brought an uncommon wet spell to the city.
