Congress, AAP say Municipal House passed agendas without due procedure

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Sept 13 — Opposition councillors from the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday accused the ruling BJP of passing key proposals in the Municipal Corporation House meeting without following democratic procedure.

A joint delegation led by Chandigarh Congress president H.S. Lucky and AAP city president Vijay Pal Singh met municipal commissioner Amit Kumar and submitted a memorandum, calling the proceedings “illegal” and demanding that the session be reconvened. Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty and Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta were also part of the delegation.

Lucky said the Opposition supports Chandigarh’s development but opposed the way municipal assets were handed over to the Chandigarh Administration. “We had demanded that the V3 roads be given only temporarily for recarpeting, with a clear condition that they be returned to the corporation after completion. But this demand was ignored,” he said.

According to Lucky, Opposition councillors were denied their right to participate. “When AAP councillors asked for voting, they were forcibly removed. Taking undue advantage of our absence, the BJP majority not only cleared the transfer of V3 roads but also rushed through a controversial proposal on the sale of MC land in Manimajra,” he said. “Why is there such a hurry to sell this land? What is the urgency?”

Vijay Pal Singh also questioned the Manimajra deal. “The entire matter raises doubts and needs scrutiny. Why sell only 7.7 acres out of 19 acres? Selling the full parcel would generate greater revenue for the MC,” he remarked. “There is definitely something wrong here that must be corrected.”

Both Congress and AAP demanded that the House meeting be held again so the issues could be debated “in the true spirit of democracy.”

Councillors Premlata, Darshana Rani, Jaswinder Kaur, Sachin Galav, Ramchander Yadav, and Yogesh Dhingra attended the meeting along with party leaders Yadvinder Mehta, Sunny Aulakh, Vikrant Tanwar and others.
